Caroline Schroeder, of Antigo, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Hospice Care in Fitchburg. She was 79 years old. She was born on March 29, 1932 in Bryant, a daughter of John and Mary (Bauer) Shimeck. She married Thomas Schroeder on August 2, 1958 at St. Wencel Catholic Church in Neva. He survives.
She was a graduate of Antigo High School class of 1950, attended the Langlade County Normal School in Antigo, and received her bachelor degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.
She taught grade school for 43 years, first at the Antigo First Ward School then at North Elementary grade School for the Unified School District of Antigo.
Survivors including her husband are a daughter Kara (Dave) Lauher, DeForest, three grandchildren Mahalla, Serenity and Noah Lauher; one step granddaughter Rachel Lauher; a sister Jacqueline Gunderson, Antigo; two brothers Daniel (Joan) Shimeck, Antigo, Edwin (Marilyn) Shimeck, Reno, Nevada.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Stanley Shimeck.
The funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Hoffmann officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the time of services at the Church on Friday. Bradley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Sad to hear of the passing of Mrs Schroeder. She was my 2nd grade teacher at First Ward in 57-58 as Miss Shimek and I had her for third grade as Mrs Schroeder. Fondest memories to her family.
Mrs. Schroeder taught me what it meant to love someone "for better or for worse;" sent me out to skate on her backyard potato field on double-blades for the very first time; and most of all that a woman can be compassionate, well-educated and do it all! Kara, you and your mom are some of my best Antigo memories. If you ever want to walk down memory lane with someone who remembers Pinky and Blue Boy, Tinta kitten and those amazing wigs hiding in your mom’s closet, I would love to “remember†her with you!
So sorry to hear about Mrs. Schroeder. I still call her that, because she was my teacher at North Elementary School. She was also my sons teacher at the same school She was a very nice person and I have thought of her often through the years
So sorry for your loss. Caroline was my first teacher at Gillis Graded School in Star Neva. I have always said that she was the reason that I became a teacher.

I had a chance to work with Caroline at North Elementary. She was an inspiration due to her dedication to her students and to her coworkers (She faithfully cleaned up the coffee cups after all of us!). Caroline had a way of straighening everything and since my room was next to hers she made sure that my posters were straight, too! My favorite story is one weekend when I was working here and our dog thought that Caroline was my mother-in-law. She always laughed about that later. Caroline's smile and kind heart kept me going through many tough days and even warmed me after she retired. I was always delighted to see her and Tom around town. She will be greatly missed.
