William J. Kubeny, of Antigo, age 70 died Tuesday December 8, 2009 at home under the care of his family and LeRoyer Hospice. He was born January 24, 1939 in Antigo to Clarence and Esther (Grambow) Kubeny. He married Karen Clark on June 11, 1966 at St. Mary of the Lakes in Lakewood, she survives.

He attended the Fourth and Fifth Ward Elementary Schools in Antigo and graduated from Antigo High School in 1957, where in one year he earned four varsity letters in sports and was named Most Valuable Athlete in his senior year.

He graduated from Northland College in Ashland in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. In 1972 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin Superior with a Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling.

Mr. Kubeny was employed at the Joint School District of Wabeno as a teacher, coach, counselor, principal and administrator from 1964 to 1972.
For one year he worked at North Central Technical Institute in Career Education Counseling. In 1973 he began his career at the Unified School District of Antigo as an Elementary School Counselor and coach of flag football, boys and girls basketball and varsity baseball. He retired in 1995.

An active member of the community, Mr. Kubeny served as Past Exalted Ruler, District Deputy, and Secretary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Antigo Lodge 662. He chaired the Elks State bowling tournament in 1991, the Elks state Drug Awareness program and their state committee for the National Service for Military Veterans and the local Membership and Lapsation committee. He was past President of the Antigo Lions Club, was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, its council and taught Sunday school, and was a charter member of the Alliance for a Drug Free Langlade County and its fair booth organizer.

He played Langlade County League Baseball, for Polar and Antigo Co-op Credit Union and on various fast and slow pitch softball teams and was one of the first Antigo Little League Umpires. He enjoyed being the public address announcer and scoreboard operator for football, scorekeeper of basketball games and public address, scorebook and scoreboard keeper for baseball and softball games. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association in November of this year. He was an avid reader and sports fan and could frequently be found on the golf course. He especially valued time spent at the "shack" with his family and friends.

Survivors including his wife are four sons Thomas (Mary), Antigo, Patrick (Katrina), Rhinelander, Jeffrey (Gretchen) DePere, and Mark (Sarah) Appleton, ten grandchildren Nick, Jake, Michael, and William E., Antigo, Alison and Alex of Rhinelander, Mitchell and Tanner of DePere, Josiah and Grace, Appleton, a brother Kenneth (Donna) Kubeny, Cecil, his mother-in- law Mercedes (Lloyd) Pelky, Townsend, many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Kate Kraft officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 3:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Bradley Funeral Home where the Antigo Elks Lodge of Sorrow will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services.

As teacher, counselor, coach and friend, he touched the lives and hearts of many.

Hello I am Grace Kubeny I am William Kubeny's one of the only girls in the family I am his Granddaughter. I miss him very much I wish I could see him at least one more time because I only knew him since i was 5 I love you grandpa by the way I am crying typing this love you and I will bring you a beer to the shack this week ok LOVE YA!
