Jean L. Grossman, of Antigo, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Care Partners in Antigo under the care of LeRoyer Hospice. She was 92 years old. She was born on June 4, 1923 in the town of Vilas, a daughter of the late Charles and Katherine (Kluball) Wetzel. She married George Grossman on July 22, 1944 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the town of Summit. He preceded her in death on November 6, 2015.
Mrs. Grossman attended Liberty Bell School in the town of Vilas and graduated from Antigo High School in 1941. She attended Langlade County Normal School and received her Bachelors Degree from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.
Mrs. Grossman retired in 1985 after 30 years of teaching at various grade schools. The latest school was Spring Valley School in Bryant. She enjoyed her students. She and her husband had a dairy farm and later raised beef cattle.
She is a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Deerbrook and the Retired Teachers Association.
She enjoyed her flowers and did much canning from their large garden. She played cards in the Kempster and Forest Homemakers Club. She loved to sing with her siblings and family and was in the church choir. She made wonderful meals for her family and guests and greeted people with much love. We were blessed to have her in our lives.
Survivors include daughter, Frances (Elroy) Kleman of Hatley; son, Bruce (Wilma) Grossman of Redgranite; nine grandchildren, Joyel, Bart (Kim), Patty, Joanne (Mark), Katie (Doug), George (Shauna), Tim (Danette), Renae (Ben) and Julie; 12 great grandchildren, Katie (Theo), Nathan, Bryce, Libby, Jacob, Jordan, Brad (Lydia), Sam (Haley), Lili, Lucas, Alex and Calvin; three great-great grandchildren, Madeline, William and Benjamin; three sisters, Fern (Francis) Koch of Sussex, Joyce Kanapka of Merrill, Glenda (Charles) DeLarwell of Oakhurst, CA; a brother, Calvin (Phyllis) Wetzel of Milwaukee; a sister-in-law Maria Wetzel.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Kautza; three sisters, Elaine Beyer, Mildred Schuman and Alice Lee; two brothers, Max Wetzel and Cyril Wetzel; sisters-in-law, Lucille and Mary; brothers-in-law, Cliff, Leonard, Harold and Elmer.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 17 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Rev. Jerome Hahn officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery in Summit Lake. Visitation will be Saturday, April 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home and Sunday, April 17 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church.
The family extends a special thank you to Pastor Jerome Hahn, Dr. Myers, Nancy and the staff from LeRoyer Hospice for the wonderful care given to Mom. Thank you to Linda, Cheryl and all the special girls at Care Partners who provided such wonderful care to Mom for over two years. You gave her a great home and we are grateful. Thank you also to our great neighbors and relatives for either bringing food or coming to assist Mom; Jim and Rose Jansen, Paula Lightfoot, Dave Ludens and family, Shirley and Ray Hess, Charles and Jan Wetzel and four guardian angels who came to Mom's assistance when she lived at home. I attended Sunny Slope School where Mrs. Grossman taught. Have many good memories of her with all the students. At one time grades 1-8, then with Mrs. Pearl Hendrichs covering grades 1-4. Two very special caring teachers. I also attended County Normal School and became a teacher. Kept in touch seeing Mrs. Grossman at those gatherings and also some times exchanging Christmas cards. Her brother Cyril was in my Antigo High School class of 1961. She will be missed.
Love, prayers and peace to the family. I was a younger cousin but she always had a smile and sincere greetings when I would see her.
Mrs. Grossman was an inspiration to me as a caring, student centered teacher. Her ability to teach multiple grades was amazing. I loved the Christmas programs...the songs, the plays, geography lessons. I didn't love having to write 'I will not skip steps' or 'I will not throw snowballs off snowball territory.' But she was consistent. Wonderful memories of a lovely lady. Prayers for peace and comfort to her family. Georgia Bergman-Harper. (Better know as Toby, the rascal kid I played)
It is with deepest regret that I cannot be at the service on Sunday as we had plans to be out of the area.

I remember Jean as one of two teachers at Sunny Slope school in the Town of Summit. Her patience and discipline left a mark on my memory and I credit her, and Pearl Henrichs with instilling a bold view of the world that I carried with me into adulthood and success in the insurance business for nearly 44 years.
Whenever I pass by the old schoolhouse, I always look back, fondly on a simpler time, when hard work and desire were instilled in young students. Even as her memories began to fail, she always greeted me at family gatherings with the same wonderful smile. I recall her lessons in writing and am still amazed at her ability to write in cursive on the huge blackboards in the classroom. I will forever cherish her memory.
My Father, Eugene F. Simon, sends his best to the family. His health has been shaky since his illness in November and he will be there in spirit and prayer.

As a teenager I tagged along with my best friends, the Lee girls, to travel up north to visit their various Wetzel relatives. This included spending time at Jean and George Grossman's farm. I remember jumping in the hay loft, swimming in the lake and sitting down to great home cooked meals prepared by Aunt Jean. Often it included bounty from their garden...corn on the cob and the juiciest, tastiest tomatoes. When others came to visit, it wasn't uncommon to gather around Jean seated at the piano to sing along as she played favorite tunes from the "good ole days." Lots of great memories.....My condolences to all of you.
