Merilean Lorraine Young, of Antigo, died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at KHTCR-Eastview. She was 91 years old. She was born on February 21, 1922 in Antigo, a daughter of the late Fayette and Betty (Holmberg) Hopkins. She married James Young on January 27, 1943 in Kingman, Arizona where her husband was stationed during World War II. He preceded her in death on 1992.
She graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1940. Mrs. Young and her husband dairy farmed in the town of Antigo for 18 years. She was also a waitress at Tesch's Supper Club for several years. In 1964 she moved to Madison and was employed by the Veterans Hospital as a secretary in the records office. She returned to Antigo in 1999.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, rock collecting, crafting, reading and gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Jamie (Glen) Gildemeister of Antigo, Beth (Gary) Chase of Lewiston, Idaho and Laurel (Joe) Leitermann of Antigo; a son, Jim (Tamara) Young of Lynwood, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Spychalla of Appleton; a brother, Pat Hopkins of Antigo; sisters-in-law, Barb Hopkins of Rhinelander and Rosie Hopkins of Black Creek; and a brother-in-law, Dick Krohn of Rhinelander.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a great grandson; four sisters, Phyllis Young, Faye Wolf, Lee Hopkins and Betty Krohn; and two brothers, Gary and Alan Hopkins.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. David Karolus officiating. Burial will take place in Bent Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9-11 am at the church.
