Julian Charles Verzal, of Antigo, died Sunday, November 17, 2013 at his home surrounded by family. He was 99 years old. He was born on May 22, 1914 in East St. Louis, Ill. a son of the late Frank and Matilda (Groh) Verzal. He married Alberta Hawke on June 6, 1942 in Alameda, Cali. She preceded him in death in 1985.
He was a retired United States Navy veteran, having served on vessels both in Pearl Harbor and in the South Pacific.
Mr. Verzal was employed by American Motors in Kenosha until his retirement. He moved to Antigo in 1987.
He loved the outdoors and planting trees. His greatest joy was spending time with his great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Diaz of Kenosha; four sons, Rodney (Carol) Verzal of Bristol, Timothy Verzal of Deer Park, Wash., Jamie (Wendy) Verzal of Tomah and Joel (Sherri) Verzal of Antigo; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Verzal of Kenosha; 13 grandchildren, Eric and Nick Verzal, Christopher, Ashley and Brittany Verzal, Jeffrey and Joe Ring, Kimmy Wormely, Matthew Julian Verzal, Nicole Conner, Brittany, Alicia and Christi Holcomb; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Anita McReynolds of Texas and Rose (Mel) Loring of Colorado.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two sons, Jeff and Terry; and a brother, Francis Verzal.
A memorial gathering will take place Thursday from 11 - 1 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Sunset Ridge Cemetery in Kenosha on Friday at 10 a.m.
