Roy P. "Butch" Schmidt Jr., of Townsend, died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was 75 years old. He was born on October 22, 1947, in Neenah, a son of Roy and Lucille (Marquardt) Schmidt. He married Lynn Voigt on July 3, 1967, in Bayonne, New Jersey.
He graduated from Menasha High School, class of 1965. Roy served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1970.
He worked for the Galloway Company in Neenah for 32 years. In 2002, Roy and Lynn moved to Townsend. He worked for NPI in 2004 until retiring in 2009.
Roy was a volunteer for the Greenville and Townsend Fire Departments. He was an active member of the Combined Locks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10544 and the Wabeno American Legion Sylvan Post 44. In 2017 he proudly went on the Honor Flight and was chaperoned by his brother, Tom. He was a trustee and President of the congregation at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Greenville and an Elder at St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend.
He was very active with church activities, hunting, fishing, boating and working on wood projects.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Schmidt of Townsend; two sons, Anthony (Cathy) Schmidt of New London and Brian Schmidt of Buchanan; a foreign-exchange daughter, Yukari (Hishasi) Uematsu of Tokyo; eight grandchildren, William (Katie) Schmidt of Gillett, Casey (Jen) Bestul of New London, Erin (Troy) Krueger of Royalton, Maxwel Schmidt of Buchanan, Alex (Carley) Reinke of Appleton, Brandon (Amanda) Reinke of Kaukauna, Haruki Uematsu of Tokyo, and Kaho Uematsu of Tokyo; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Suezanne (Richard) Mueller of Indiana; a brother, Thomas (Vicki) Schmidt of Winchester; a sister-in-law, Chris Voigt of Menasha; three brothers-in-law, Donald (Kathy) Voigt of Darboy, Roger (Merry) Voigt of Menasha, and Randal Voigt of Tacoma, Washington; an aunt, Carol Rasmussen of Menasha; five godchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Schmidt; parents-in-law, Nyal and Doris Voigt; and a brother-in-law, Charles Voigt.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 23, 2022 at 12 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend with Pastor David Schroeder officiating. Military honors to follow. Burial will take place in Forest Home Cemetery in spring. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday at the church.
