Ray Guthrie, of Antigo, died Sunday, November 21, 2021. He was 56 years old. He was born on April 8, 1965, in Chicago, a son of the late J. D. and Rita (Mainczyk) Guthrie. He married Amy Lane on September 7, 2002, in Hobart, Indiana.
Ray moved to Antigo in 2014. He was a machinist, having been employed at Merit Gear and was currently employed at Waukesha Bearings.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Ray was very active in the recovery community, he loved fishing and being in the outdoors.
He was a coach and volunteer for his son's sporting activities.
He loved family and always put family first. His second love was music, he enjoyed bluegrass and the Grateful Dead.
Survivors include his wife, Amy; a son, Zach Guthrie; two brothers, Steven (Nadine) Guthrie of Lansing, Ill and James Guthrie of Lynwood, Ill; a sister, Ellena Kivo of Munster, Ind; his father and mother-in-law, Steven and Mona Lane of La Crosse, Ind; a brother-in-law, Matt (Libby) Lane of La Crosse, Ind; and a sister-in-law, Samantha (Travis) Kleca of Laporte, Ind. Ray is also survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Dan Kohn officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, December 4 at the church from 9 to 11 a.m.

I first met Ray Guthrie at the Wednesday evening Antigo-area Alcoholics Anonymous closed meeting during the winter of 2018-2019. In those days before COVID the meeting was held at the Antigo United Methodist Church on the western end of 5th Avenue.
Ray was an intelligent, lucid, and even charismatic speaker and man. He was the anchor of our group and helped many of us to get and stay sober, something he had by then been doing for decades to my knowledge. Ray had a gift of being able to hold people accountable without casting judgment, and this motivated many to "keep coming back".
Later I discovered that Ray was also a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where my wife and I had our daughter baptized. In fact it was only two months ago that I last saw Ray in the parking lot of the Peace Lutheran Church, and we chatted as friends do. I specifically recall that we discussed how others in the recovery community were doing, and Ray also suggested prune juice for infantile constipation. The conversation went on for ten minutes, and we both had to end it. What I didn't know then was that this was the final time I would ever see Ray Guthrie. I still can't believe he's gone and miss him dearly.

I am sorry to hear of Raymond's passing. I was very happy to have learned how he was getting along via the St. Ann School facebook page. Ray, not really talking to him much, always had a special place in my heart as we grew up. My condolences to his wife and son, Mary Terese Frederickson.
Amy and Zach, I was so sorry to hear about Ray. Amy and Ray teaching 3 and 4 year olds in SS is such a special memory. I always enjoyed seeing him at church and having a little chat. May the Lord give you comfort at this difficult time. You have been in my thoughts and prayers.
