At the end of the day Friday, March 19, 2021, Mom said "I'm tired. I want to go to sleep." Just as she was comfortably lying down the Lord called her to Eternal Rest.

She was 97 years old. She was born on December 8, 1923, in Antigo, a daughter of Frank and Emma (Peters) Krueger. She married Richard Schardt on June 21, 1941, in Mattoon. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1997.

She was a longtime town of Norwood resident and member of Peace Lutheran Church.

She was a teenager during the depression. A new wife and mother as WWII raged and her husband was deployed to Germany. She worked at the shoe company factory in Antigo during this time. A woman ahead of her time she cooked at Kasson's Drive-In in the summer. In the spring and fall she donned her blue jeans and bandanas to cut and pick potatoes in area fields. For one season she owned and operated a Drive-In in Menasha. In 1969 she began working at Amron factory in Antigo retiring after 25 years of service. She was an Avon sales representative for many years.

A great cook, she loved company. Everyone was welcome at her table. Her husband's abundant garden kept her busy picking raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, and the seasonal harvest. She milked cows to make her own butter and cooked maple syrup.

Her hobbies included playing schafkopf, bowling and snowmobiling. She loved shopping trips to Wausau and Green Bay.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy (Raymond) Dolezal of Green Bay; a son, Barry (Angela) Schardt of Manitowoc; five grandchildren Jay (Jenna) Dolezal, Josh Dolezal, Daniel (Jolene) Albert, Job (Rosemary) Albert, Kathryn (Kyle) Faber; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Roger at birth and Jeff Schardt; a daughter, Candace Schardt Albert; two brothers, Raymond (Linda) Krueger and Leonard (Irene) Krueger; two sisters, Vera (Karl) Bornemann and Beverly Rose.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Reverend David Karolus officiating.

Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Antigo.

Plant a tree in memory of Bernice

An environmentally friendly option

H Holly (Pearson) Heinen on Mar 27, 2021

Although the last time I saw Bernie, I was a very young girl, the memory I have of her is that of an extremely kind and gentle person. I hope that I, too, will be remembered in such a way! If my memory is accurate, then certainly her family was extremely blessed to have been a part of her life.
