Vernon G King, of Antigo, died Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Aspirus Comfort Care Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 71 years old. He was born on January 2, 1949, in Mattoon, a son of Louis and Margaret (Schmidt) King. He married Thelma Nugent on June 11, 1971, in Texas. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1993. He later married Linda Chrudimsky on July 20, 1996, at St Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church in Phlox. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2018.

He was raised in Phlox, attended St. Joseph and Crestwood Grade Schools and graduated from Antigo High School in 1967. Vernon worked for Schultz Creamery for a year.

He served in the United States Army from June 10, 1969 to June 9, 1971. While stationed in Vietnam he earned six medals for meritorious achievement: the Bronze Star Medal; the Bronze Star Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; the Army Commendation Medal: the Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; two air medals for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam.

Following military service, he farmed on the family farm for two years. For 15 years he worked as a sawyer, logging for Gary DeHart until 2001. From 2002 to 2018 he was employed at Wal Mart in Antigo.

He enjoyed trips to the Casino and ice fishing.

He was a member of the Phlox Sportsman Club, the Devine Menting American Legion Post 525, Phlox, and St. Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church.

He served as a volunteer on the town of Norwood Fire Department.

Survivors include a son, Robert King of Antigo; two step-daughters, Crystal (Brian) Tratz, Oshkosh; Brenda (Daniel) Abel of Oshkosh; two step-sons, Norman Martin, Waco, Texas, Rick Martin, Texas; three sisters, Margaret (Ronald) Heschke, Iola, Sharon Gibson, Antigo, Carol (Duane) Philipps, Deerbrook; two brothers, Arthur (Sheri) King, Antigo, Kenneth (Kathy) King, Menomenee, Michigan; a brother in law, Richard Smith, Aniwa; a sister-in-law, Cora King, Phlox; also survived by his second wife Linda's family - Carol (Richard) Kersten, Mazomanie, Sally Reed, and friend Todd, Wausau, Helen (Jeff) Schultz, Antigo, Connie (Randy) Duchan, Antigo, Ed (Sandy) Chrudimsky, Antigo, Dewey (Kay) Chrudimsky, Antigo.

In addition to his wives and parents he was preceded in death by a stepson, Eugene Martin; three sisters, Agnes Van Riper, Valeria Smith and Blanche King in infancy; a brother, Jerome King; three brothers-in-law, Floyd Gibson, Dean Van Riper, and Paul Chrudimsky; two sisters-in-law Mars and Crystal Chrudimsky.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Edmundo Siguenza officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church following the Mass. Burial will take place in the town of Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the church.

My condolences to Vernon’s family. I attended Crestwood Elementary School with Vernon. He played on the Evergreens basketball team. Such a nice person. I’m sure he will be missed by family.
