Herschel Hersch Smith, of Knights Templar Club, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Eastview Medical & Rehabilitation Center. He was 84 years old. Born November 12, 1923 in Buffulo, NY to Herschel and Stella (Gaylord) Smith. He married Arlene Smith on May 10, 1952 at Madison, WI. She survives.

He graduated from Bennett High School in Buffolo, NY, then served as an aerial photographer for the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He worked as a salesman for Simplex Time Recorder Company in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, retiring in 1981 as district manager in their Chicago office.
He was one of the founding members of the Buffofo Bills Quartet, a barbershop quartet that went on to sing on Broadway and the movie The Music Man. Singing continued to be an important part of his life singing with his wife at local events and professionally. His last performance was at the 2008 Memorial Day Ceremonies at Summit Lake.
He was a member of the Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, and the Noetzelman-Boodry American Legion Post #377, Elcho

Survivors include his wife, Arlene and two daughters, Lynnette (Les Boudrot) Smith, Minneapolis, MN, Michele Shelly(Doug) Wood, Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Zachary and Jacob Wood.

He was preceded in death by his one sister Dorothy Atwill

Services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Knights Templar Clubhouse with Rev. Jack LaMar officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Knights Templar Clubhouse. Elcho American Legion Post will conduct military rites following services.
