Verna E. Bernarde former Pickerel resident, died Friday February 23, 2007 in West Allis, she was 94. Born on January 25, 1913 in Canada to Allen and Elizabeth (Whitteker) Barkley she married Hjalmer Agen on June 15, 1938 in Valparaiso, Indiana he preceded her in death in 1960. On July 24, 1965 she married Raymond Bernarde in Waukegan Illinois, he preceded her in death on March 22, 2005.

She attended school in Canada and began her nurses training program at Dr. Locke Foot Clinic in Canada. She became a United States Citizen on May 26, 1943. She continued her nurses training in the United States at the Milwaukee County Hospital where she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for 22 years retiring in January 1975. In 1976 she moved to Pickerel. After her husband Raymonds death she moved to Waukesha.

Survivors include two daughters Joan Bartling of Waukesha, and Judy Stull of Pickerel. One son James Agen of Milwaukee. Four Grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husbands, 3 sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 1, 2007 at St. John Lutheran Church in Pickerel with Rev. Charles Kramer officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Pearson Cemetery in spring. Bradley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
