I was the other 'George'. Mrs. Grossman (Jean) was my teacher from 5th - 7th grade at Sunny Slope School. My given name is Georgia, but in those days, I really wanted to be called 'George'. I was the tomboy of the class. I consistently wrote 'George' on my papers, and she corrected them each and every time. So when Christmas rolled around, George G. would be in attendance, and we would chuckle and joke about me being 'the other George'. He was a kind, quiet guy -- a George Gobel. I haven't had the privilege of visiting with George or Jean in many years, but my sympathies go out to the whole family. I am sure he will be missed by many.

I remember years ago when my parents would
travel up to the Antigo area to see & visit with
all the relatives & grandparents. It was always
a enjoyable to get to Grossman's when George,
Jean, Gloria, Bruce & Fran were all there.

I remember once when I was interested in looking
for land. I asked Uncle George about it so he
took me around the area and showed me some
properties that were available at that time. Anyway no land was purchased but it was nice
hanging out with Uncle George that afternoon.

He always was a fine gentleman. He will be
missed.

Uncle George was the pillar of the farm, a great hardworking husband, dad, and constant in his affection, compassion for those less fortunate (ex., providing hay in winter), and had the most understated humor ever! The Grossman farm was our get-away-from-the-city home and second family during our childhoods, such fun helping hay, with big breakfasts and lunches including drinking big cups of 1/2 coffee 1/2 milk, and maybe 1/2 sugar too! Aunt Jean and mom bustling about the kitchen getting ready for the big dinners at noon while Fran and I helped shuck corn and sneak off to swim and play with the kittens. Ah, a good life. Thank you Uncle George - love and sweet journey all the way home. Jeanne

My very favorite childhood memories were spending time with the Grossmans at their farm. Uncle George was a hard worker, had a sense of humor & said "just add a little water to the soup" if company dropped in! We display a plank of cherished barn wood on our living room wall....so Uncle George's memory lives on!

Grandpa baked the best strudel amongst many other tasty concoctions. I spent many nights as a child sleeping or trying to sleep in the room above his as he was a very deep sleeper and very loud snorer, it seemed to make the floor vibrate and I always wondered how grandma looked so beautiful and well-rested. He had so many pencils he used on his crosswords that were sharpened down to stubs but rarely were the erasers ever used, to this day I have never been able to use an entire pencil before the eraser was gone - he was so smart! He loved to plant trees and every visit the house seemed to get smaller and smaller as it became engulfed in his fast-growing hobby. Playing solitaire, sitting on the couch with him and holding his hand while we discussed the stock market, inflation, and good 'ol days, smoking cigs and enjoying his sharp wit....all these things and more i will miss, love you grandpa!
